VoIP security - The dos and don'ts of VoIP security

Though there is precious little evidence of VoIP security attacks, organisations cannot afford to be complacent. Make no mistake, says Anthony Plewes, VoIP is an attractive target for hackers and malware writers.

To demonstrate the potential danger that enterprises with unsecured VoIP systems face, the Voice over IP Security Association (Voipsa) has published a list of publicly available tools that target VoIP applications. There are signs hackers are now turning their attention to voice over IP and most security commentators believe the first major attacks will occur over the next six to 12 months.

This means all enterprises need to ensure their VoIP infrastructure is protected, though this needn't be an onerous undertaking.

The simple fact that VoIP now typically comes under the aegis of the IT department should in fact help security. Although running proprietary operating systems, PBXs were in fact open to a large range of security attacks. It was generally just a little harder to access and required specialised knowledge.

While VoIP has increased the number of people able to exploit a corporate phone system, the tools and expertise to protect the technology have also been improved.

VLANs
======

The first step for VoIP security is to follow data networking best practice. Ovum analyst Graham Titterington says: "Most security in VoIP is a question of good network security and housekeeping."

Enterprises should deploy the voice traffic on a separate virtual LAN, or VLAN, from the data traffic. This helps protect the voice service if there is a denial of service attack on the data network.

Chris Whitwood, network manager at University College Falmouth, which has deployed IP telephony, says: "Denial of service is a particular problem for VoIP as it can completely destroy your telephony service. To protect against this, enterprises need to use security such as intrusion prevention systems and have a well-segmented network using VLANs."

VLANs need to be properly architected to prevent packets jumping from one VLAN to the other. However, even if they are, hacking tools are available that can make packets do just that. Additional tools that will help networks in case of any attack are intrusion detection and prevention systems, which scan for rogue incoming packets, and straightforward antivirus software which can help prevent any known threats from disrupting the network.

Cisco and EMC planning to partner up and go after large datacentres

Networking giant Cisco Systems and storage area networking company EMC may be teaming up to form a new joint venture to provide technology services to big companies, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Citing unnamed sources who have been briefed on the plans, the Journal story said the new joint venture, codenamed Alpine, would target large businesses and would focus on installing Cisco server and networking gear and EMC storage equipment into datacentres.

It's unclear when the joint venture might be announced, according to the newspaper. So far, Cisco has declined to comment on the speculation. And an EMC spokesperson provided a statement to the WSJ reiterating that the companies have always been close partners and will continue to be in the future.

Indeed, Cisco has been reselling EMC storage gear for years. Cisco also owns a stake in virtualisation software company VMware, which operates as a unit of EMC. So it makes sense that the companies would team up on a new services venture.

What's more, Cisco has been making a big push into the datacentre market. Earlier this year Cisco announced a new datacentre architecture it calls Unified Computing. This new architecture includes new hardware from Cisco, namely blade servers, an interconnection "fabric," a chassis for the blade servers, fabric extenders and network adapters. It also includes coordinated support and software integration from partners such as Intel, Microsoft, EMC, and VMware.

Cisco sees the datacentre market as a multibillion-dollar opportunity. The company anticipates a greater need for storage and high-speed networking within datacentres as more services and content come online. At the same companies are starting to virtualise their datacentres to make those operations more efficient.

Cisco and EMC each already have service businesses of their own. EMC generated about $4.8bn in revenue in 2008 from its services business, according to the Wall Street Journal. This was about 32 per cent of the company's overall revenue.

The Journal also said that Cisco's services business generated about $7bn to the company's coffers in fiscal 2009, which was about 19 per cent of total revenue.

Most of the services that Cisco provides are for products that have already been sold. But the new joint venture would be different because it would entail designing and implementing products to fit into a datacentre. And as datacentres become more complex, it makes sense that Cisco and EMC would want to develop a service to help customers design a datacentre that would use their products.

Traditionally, Cisco has relied on partners such as HP and IBM to provide these services and help sell its gear to customers. But with the introduction of Cisco's new datacentre server products, Cisco's partners are looking more like competitors.

The move to create a services business looks to be part of Cisco's overall strategy to diversify its business. The company's bread and butter is still providing routers and switches to large companies and service providers to power the internet. But over the past couple of years the company has begun to move aggressively into new areas like IP telephony, videoconferencing and consumer electronics and home networking gear.

Cisco has also dipped its toe into other services markets. For example, with the acquisition of WebEx, the company now offers corporate users a hosted collaboration service. It has also recently launched a hosted web service it calls Eos that allows media and entertainment companies to create, manage, and grow online communities by providing tools to create websites.

Dhoni marriage photos and pictures are the most searched on the net. But its surprising that even after knowing the venue of Dhoni's marriage our paparazzi were not able to click Ms Dhoni's marriage and wedding pictures with Sakshi Rawat. Even the marriage pictures of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were covered somehow but not Dhoni and Sakshi Rawat's marriage.

MS Dhoni and Sakshi Singh Rawat got engaged at Hotel Competant in Dehradun on Saturday and their marraige took place the next day at Vishranti Resort, near Dehradun. Vishranti Resort is owned by Raje and many high profile guests attended Dhoni's marriage.

Sakshi, a hotel management graduate and Dhoni had been knowing each other since their school days. Their fathers also worked together in Ranchi and both the families were quite close since then.

Dhoni's wedding was attended by high profile guests like ICC chief Sharad Pawar, BCCI President Shashank Manohar, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, Actor John Abraham, Director Farah Khan and cricketers R.P.Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra and Suresh Raina.

More than 100 poilcemen were posted at the gates of Vishranti Resort to ensure that only cars whose numbers were already given were allowed to enter.

It is believed that the recception will be held in Mumbai on July 7, Dhoni's Birthday.
Wishing Dhoni and Sakshi a very happy married life.

Five greatest innings by Dhoni

Five greatest innings by Dhoni

183 v Sri Lanka, Jaipur, 2005-06
Sri Lanka set India a formidable 299 to win, and India lose Tendulkar in the first over. But Dhoni, promoted to No. 3, plunders 183 off 145 balls, and takes India to victory with 23 balls to spare. His innings includes 15 fours and 10 sixes, and it is the highest score by a wicketkeeper, the highest individual score batting second, and it has the highest number of runs scored in boundaries at the time.

148 v Pakistan, Visakhapatman, 2004-05
Dhoni is playing his fifth ODI and walks in at No. 3 after Sachin Tendulkar has fallen in the fourth over. The pitch is flat, and Dhoni cashes in in a spectacular manner. He scores his maiden ODI century, 148 off 123 balls with 15 fours and four sixes, and by the time he's done shewag 74 off 40 balls has been overshadowed. It is the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper - barring Rahul Dravid - and by the time Dhoni is out, India are 289 for 4 in the 42nd over.

148 v Pakistan, Faisalabad 2005-06
After Pakistan have scored 588 in the first innings, India are in danger of conceding a massive first-innings lead after losing their top five for 281. Dhoni disregards the match situation, matched fire with fire, and what follows is a breathless knock that kills any chances of a result in the Test. A fired-up Shoaib Akhtar steams in and peppers Dhoni with a barrage of short balls, but Dhoni responds with a thrilling counterattack, hooking and pulling with aggression that almost approaches recklessness. He hits four sixes and 19 fours in his innings for 148, which take him only 153 balls. By the time he is out, India trail by only 97 runs.

72 and 77 v Pakistan, Lahore and Karachi, 2005-06
The knocks that consolidate his reputation of being a finisher. With the five-match series level at 1-1, and India needing 290 to win the Lahore one-dayer, Dhoni walks in with India needing 99 off 92 balls with five wickets in hand. Yuvraj Singh is batting on 53, but Dhoni completely overshadows him, smashing 72 runs off 46 balls to win the game in the 48th over.

76 v England at Lord's, 2007
This is perhaps Dhoni's most valuable innings, for it helps India avoid impending defeat and provides the turnaround for a historic series victory in England. He has played an atrocious shot to get out for a duck in the first innings, and is the last of India's recognized batsmen, when at 145 for 5 India need to bat for more than two sessions to save the Test. He adds 86 for the sixth wicket with VVS Laxman who gets out with India on 231 for 6. Dhoni rides his luck, survives several edges and bats for 159 balls for his 76. He keeps losing partners, but manages to hang on with Sreesanth, the No 11, until the rain, which has threatened to arrive all day, finally does and ends the Test.

9. Dhoni, when he was on 4 during his innings of 23 against Sri Lanka at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Saturday, completed his 4,000 runs in ODIs. Having already effected 165 dismissals (125 catches + 40 stumpings), Dhoni became the sixth wicketkeeper after Adam Gilchrist, Andy Flower, Alec Stewart, Mark Boucher and Kumar Sangakkara to complete the 'double' of 4,000 runs and 100 dismissals in the history of ODIs. Dhoni's feat of completing the 'double' of 4,000 runs and 100 dismissals in only 114 innings is a world record. He is the youngest wicket-keeper batsman to do so (27 years and 208 days). Previously such feat was owned by Kumar Sangakkara (28 years and 247 days).

In June 2007, Dhoni(139*) and Mahela Jayawardene(107) set a new world record for the sixth wicket partnership of 218 runs against Africa XI during the Afro-Asia Cup. Following three records made in this match
10. Dhoni erased Shaun Pollock's record for highest individual innings by a number seven batsman in one-day internationals during his unbeaten innings of 139 Incidentally, Pollock record stood for just three days as his score of 130 came in the first match of the 2007 Afro-Asia Cup while Dhoni's century came in the third and final match of the series
11. Dhoni also holds the records of the most dismissals in an innings by an Indian wicketkeeper and joint International (with Adam Gilchrist) with 6 dismissals (5 catches and one stumping) against England at Headlingly 2 September 2007
12. Dhoni holds the Indian record of most dismissals in ODIs. He went past Nayan Mongia's 154 for India on November 14 2008 when he caught Ian Bell off Zaheer Khan at Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground, Rajkot. However including 3 ODIs against Africa XI, his 155th dismissal was TM Dilshan caught off Munaf Patel at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 24th August, 2008.
